Brow Lift or Forehead Lift

The signs of aging first become apparent on the forehead and eye area. The drooping of the eyebrows, lengthening of the forehead and the wrinkles and furrows that go along with these makes you appear sad, tired and angry – it makes you present an appearance that does not truly represent the way you feel. At times, a furrowed brow can even become obtrusive and interfere with your line of sight.

The cosmetic surgeons offer brow lifts that can restore that youthful and refreshed look to the area above the eyes. The procedure which is also referred to as a forehead lift corrects deep frown lines, sagging eyebrows and forehead creases to draw attention to your eyes, soften your look and show your true expression.

Q & A

How are brow lifts or forehead lifts performed?

Your surgeon will help you decide which surgical technique will best achieve your cosmetic goals: the classic or "open" method, or the endoscopic forehead lift. The classic forehead lift usually involves a coronal incision which follows a headphone like pattern made behind the hairline resulting in inconspicuous scarring. On the other hand the endoscopic forehead lift involves three, four or five short scalp incisions, each less than an inch in length. With the aid of a small camera in one of the incisions, the forehead skin is then lifted and the muscles and tissues beneath the skin removed or altered to produce a smoother appearance. The procedure may also involve the lifting and repositioning of the eyebrows.

Can patients with a high or receding hairline have a brow lift?

Yes. Your surgeon will determine where to place the incision to avoid adding more height to the forehead and to minimize visible scarring.

What age is ideal to get a brow lift?

If indications fit, a Forehead Lift can be performed as early as the 30s, and well into the 70s.

How long will the forehead lift procedure take?

This outpatient procedure typically takes about an hour or two.

What can I expect post-op?

After surgery, you may experience fatigue, numbness, pain and mild swelling. Within about three weeks, though, most of the obvious signs of surgery will fade and you will appear more rested.

When can I resume regular activities?

Most patients return to their normal routines in one to two weeks. Your cosmetic surgeon will, however, discuss activities that you should avoid or should remain limited for a certain period of time (e.g. activities that increase blood pressure, sun exposure).

Can other procedures be performed in conjunction with brow lifts?

Yes. It is not uncommon for brow lifts to be performed in conjunction with a facelift to better meet a patient’s goal for a smoother overall look to the face. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may also be performed at the same time as a forehead lift, especially if a patient has significant skin overhang in the upper eyelids.
